Government Resources

While traveling internationally, the resources, level of medical care, customs/attitudes, and laws related towards discrimination and sexual violence vary greatly. Prior to traveling, it is important to understand the resources available to you; however, if you find yourself in need of assistance and do not know if it is safe to report or seek assistance via local emergency services, reach out to the resources below for further guidance and assistance.

Please note that while on university travel, all Northeastern community members can contact the 24/7 Travel Assistance hotline sponsored by Northeastern’s Global Safety and Support Network at +1-857-214-5332 to receive medical or security assistance and guidance.

U.S. Citizens
  • You can search for the location and contact information of your embassy/consulate on the USembassy.gov website which lists out Embassies, Consulates, Diplomatic Missions, and Offices Providing Consular Services. Embassies/consulates have emergency contact information and have American Citizen Services offices that can provide guidance to U.S. citizens abroad in a crisis.
  • You can also call the International Assistance Hotline at 888-407-4747 from within Canada and the U.S. or +1-202-501-4444 if you are overseas.

Disability-Related Accommodations

Disability Access Services (DAS) is dedicated to partnering with the diverse population of students, staff, and faculty who we serve at Northeastern and in the surrounding community.

Global First-Year Programs

N.U.in

The N.U.in program is an international first-year program where students spend their first semester of college abroad. While abroad, you will have support in person from Northeastern on-site staff and host institution staff as well as virtual support from Boston based Northeastern offices. If you find yourself needing to talk to someone about discrimination or sexual violence, you have options.

A Note on Hospitals:

  • Victims of sexual assault are immediately assessed by a nurse and given a ‘triage code’, most commonly ‘yellow.’ The expected waiting time to be seen by a doctor for a yellow-coded patient is 10-20 minutes. Be sure to alert the hospital staff of your reason for seeking medical attention so that you can be given care as soon as possible.
  • It is important to note that within the country of Italy, you may be barred from having forensic evidence collected if you are choosing not to report the crime. You will still receive medical assistance.

A Note on Hospitals:

Only public hospitals will collect forensic samples regardless of your choice to report the incident or not. Find a list of local public hospitals below. If you change your mind later on, the collected samples can be used. Private hospitals can collect evidence if a police report is filed.

Global Scholars

Global Scholars is a global first-year program that spans the duration of your first year of college. You will spend your first two semesters on different Northeastern campuses. Study Abroad is an opportunity to spend a semester or more abroad earning Northeastern credit.

If you find yourself needing to talk to someone about discrimination or sexual violence while you are abroad, know that you have options. Each Northeastern study abroad partner has different support systems in place. Reach out to your local institution for additional information about institution-specific resources.
