1. OUEC Receives Initial Request

  • Initial assessment is performed immediately
  • Immediate health and safety concerns are considered and local law enforcement is notified as appropriate

2. OUEC Sends Outreach to the Complainant

  • The complainant is usually reached via email with information including: explaining the role of OUEC, support resources, and procedural options

3. OUEC Meets with Complainant

  • This meeting is completely optional
  • Complainant may elect to share information about their experience and/or file a formal report. A formal report is a signed document that outlines the allegations and requests an informal or formal resolution.

4. Complainant Requests one of the following:

For cases where the Respondent is not a member of the Northeastern Community, the Formal and Informal Processes are unavailable. However, the OUEC can still offer any Northeastern-based resources that feel relevant, and can also connect you to local law enforcement, or another institution/company where the Respondent is a student/employee, if applicable.

Formal Resolution

  • Includes a full investigation
  • OUEC makes formal findings of fact; may include disciplinary action
  • Both Complainant and Respondent are able to view all collected information and evidence
  • Where Title IX applies, process allows for a live cross-examination

Informal Resolution

  • Voluntary, remedy driven process
  • Does not include formal findings of fact or discipline of Respondent
  • Cannot be offered in situations where the Complainant is a student and Respondent is an employee
  • Can result in different outcomes such as: a no contact order, education for an individual/group, a facilitated dialogue, or an impact statement

No Action

  • Parties may request that OUEC takes no action in response to their report
  • Complainants will still receive support resources

5. Assistant Vice President for Equity and Compliance / Title IX Coordinator Review

  • Mark Jannoni, the Assistant Vice President for Equity and Compliance and Title IX Coordinator will review the Complainant’s requested resolution option. The AVP generally seeks to honor the Complainant’s request, except in extenuating circumstances.
